Today is the first Global Encryption Day!

🔒 Encryption makes life safer. Without it, our banking details, personal conversations, medical history, and everything in between is on display.

Now is the time to #MakeTheSwitch to encrypted services (like Tor!)

https://blog.torproject.org/first-global-encryption-day

Hubert Chathi reshared this.
I agree that we need encryption, but this is highly misleading. If you use Tor, and then use Facebook or Telegram, it won't magically end-to-end encrypt anything or make you anonymous. Now, this might seem obvious, but most people on this planet aren't technical and genuinely don't understand this. So, yeah... the way you're advertising for Tor here could mislead some people into a false sense of security and anonymity, which can even become dangerous.

Entering the Matrix 👩‍💻

We are happy to announce an expansion of the Tor community's day-to-day conversations by bridging our IRC community the Matrix platform.

For regular Tor users, it means that you can chat with us using a friendly App like Element.

isnt the matrix server project known for sending metadata and userinfo from self-hosted servers to their flagship instance without a way to disable the data collection?
jcgruenhage mastodon (AP)
No, it isn't. There's a few things you could mean though:
- Synapse sends back some server stats to the Synapse devs, if configured to do so. This is opt-in though, and does not contain info about users, just aggregated stats on the server.
- Synapse verifies server keys via a notary server in addition to verifying them via a TLS conn with the server itself. As an admin, you can configure any server you want there, but the default is matrix.org. 1/2
jcgruenhage mastodon (AP)
- Last but not least: Element collects some telemetry data as well, so this is also potentially problematic. Again though, this is opt-in.

A thing that might actually be problematic though, is that Tor users in specific had problems connecting to matrix servers hosted by Element, including matrix.org, due to problems with Cloudflare. If the Tor project announces usage though, I'll assume those problems have been resolved by now

A very worthwhile endeavour

A bit over a week ago, this Friendica instance suddenly stopped receiving posts over ActivityPub. It took me a while to figure it out, but it turned out that my server's clock was drifting, and at some point drifted to be more than 5 minutes off, which caused issues with signature verification. So I fixed the NTP configuration on my server, and now things seem to be back to normal. I've missed about a week of posts, but I guess I'll survive.

Election day today. Canadians, vote!

I wrote a tool in Elixir for checking the setup of Matrix servers. See more information about it in this week's This Week in Matrix post.

Facebook is doing research in AI & #endtoend encrypted messages, to analyze & target ads on them.

How an AI can determine you are trying to buy designer shoes, but your private discussion about health or politics won't leak?

We have no clue either.

Here's a little thing that may not be obvious to many people....

When you install an open-source app from Google Play or the Apple app store, there is no guarantee that what you install actually matches the public code.

@fdroidorg are doing a great service. They independently build the public source code for apps from scratch, review for common issues, and publish their builds. Thanks to "reproducible builds" it's possible to verify they do not tamper with the code.

While the crypto wars continue, we would like to remind everyone of two very convincing facts for the pro encryption side:

✅ 1. Encryption can't be outlawed

✅ 2. Backdoors for the good guys only are impossible

Here is our stance on the ongoing crypto wars:

We seem to have been here before. The province begins opening up just as a new variant threatens to take hold. Our overall R value is about 0.8, but the R value for the Delta variant is over 1.2, and we're less than a week into re-opening. We'll see how we fare this time, but it didn't turn out that well last time.
