The ACLU and EFF's victory over causeless searches of phones and laptops at the US border is a great step in the fight for digital freedom.

Database migration to new hardware is complete and so far things look pretty promising. We'll be doing further migrations over the next few days, but hopefully the root cause of the recent disruptions is now solved.

A good opportunity to highlight the decentralization of the protocol :)

There are so many easy ways to setup a synapse server nowadays, from your managed setup:

Over the official Ansible playbook:

To my very personal (undocumented :blobfoxsad:) playbook:

Definitely worth looking into that.

#matrix #federation #selfhosting homeserver is still suffering badly from IO problems. we’re trying to accelerate the migration to the new datacentre. sorry for the outage :(

Netflix #DRM finds yet another way to limit your choices: older Samsung and Panasonic "smart" televisions and Roku devices will no longer work with the Netflix app. We weren't kidding when we said that DRM makes software and devices defective by design.

We did it! We came together as a community and met our fundraising goal to defend software freedom from patent litigation.
Next up comes the hard part - winning this lawsuit and setting precedent. Stay tuned for updates as we progress forward

Exactly 5 years ago at 16:42, was the first CryptPad commit by @cjdelisle, the start of a very ambitious project to restore privacy in collaboration tools. We believed in it 5 years ago and we thank the 200 supporters and 10000 weekly users from 150 countries that have joined us

Further IO problems on the homeserver; we're in the process of migrating to more reliable hardware over the coming days. Apologies for the outages :(

Hey everyone! Some really good news: The good people at Vector IM are adding many accessibility features to the @matrix client It is much more usable now than it used to be a year or so ago, both on the web and on iOS. #a11y #RiotIM #matrixdotorg

We're hiring still at Mozilla!

This feels squickily like self-promotion (which I hate), but some folks round here might find something interesting there.

I will also mention that we have ongoing efforts to recruit folks who are *not* like me - i.e. straight old cis white guys.

So, if you are *not* like me along any of those axes, I especially encourage you to give it a looksee.

On other news when is 1.4 coming to buster backports?
I don't know what andrewsh's plan is.

So, who wants to work full time on and ? Remote friendly, RTs welcome for reach #opensource #FOSS #decentralization

What’s that? You were wondering what happened in Matrix this week? Don’t worry, we have you covered

A great quote from the blog post of one of the new investors in New Vector:

At last, the market has an alternative to these walled gardens with a range of messaging solutions from New Vector based on the open source Matrix protocol and complete data ownership and security. It feels like the full power and promise of the Internet is being returned to its rightful owner – the user.
