I can really recommend you to set up your own #matrix homeserver!
@matrix has made it really simple to set it up on a debian based machine thanks to their .deb package.

@matrix I've been quite critical of #matrix for some of its choices and for all it's bluster against #xmpp (some merited, some overblown, and some equally applicable to matrix today...), but I still think it's worth encouraging it--and any other secure foss messaging protocols--else we fall back on #whatsapp, #skype, #hangouts clusterfuck. From the other perspective: @matrix, you've made a lot of ambitious promises. I hope you don't let us down.

My @matrix account is now bridged with IRC + Telegram. #Riot.im is much more usable than when I tried it more than a year ago, and the upcoming release looks even better. I'm @cybette:matrix.org, and still cybette on Freenode - hopefully with more availability/less disconnects going forward 😄

Really impressed by @matrix 's FOSDEM 2019 talk.

A lot of performance improvements in Synapse and great UX improvements in Riot - especially the E2EE workflows.

The push for LE certs seems a bit too aggressive though.
One open question would be how one would use Matrix over tor onion addresses if CA certificates are mandated by the protocol itself?
