I'm *really* not happy about the #Github #Sponsors project (https://github.com/sponsors).
It'll bind a lot of open source project much more strongly to github's closed, proprietary ecosystem if that's where they have any chance of getting some money.

It's so hypocritical that soo many #FOSS projects are hosted on a non-free platform. With #Gitlab there's even a superior just as easy to use alternative there.

And most people are celebrating this move by github 😢.
Having been involved in the #FDroid project in the last 3 years I've used #Gitlab a lot during this time.

Not only do I find it more intuitive to use by now (and github is slowly copying features that gitlab introduced years ago), it also really makes a difference that the development of gitlab itself is open.

Got an bug/feature request? Jump into the issue tracker and help shape the discussion about it. Or someone might even jump in and provide an implementation for it.
The only thing that's still really missing in that whole space is fedeartion between all the project hosting instances out there, so you don't need the network effect of gitlab.com or github anymore.

I think gitlab will be happy to integrate this (there's a lot of talk in their issue trackers about this already). I wonder if github ever would. It could totally undermine their position as the "place where everyone already is", because that wouldn't matter anymore.
@Bubu That's interesting. I hadn't heard of a federation possibility. That would be useful for the Redox OS instance, too.
@Bubu GitLab really has the deciding power on this. They need to choose a standard, and other git frontends will follow (gitea, gogs, etc)
@Bubu This is the normal Embrace - Extend - Exterminate cycle of Microsoft. Right now they've just started the Extend part of OSS and Linux (WSL). We all know what comes next.
@Bubu I absolutely agree.I moved away from Github to NotABug many months ago and I'm really happy with it.I'm collecting donations using Liberapay and even if it's not absolutely perfect,it's still a acceptable solution I want to continue with. The problem is now that many people will likely start to only donate to shit on Github so that they don't need accounts on multiple payment platforms. And whenever someone decides against Github,he won't receive money. That sucks.
@Bubu Ironically it's a free software service I (not too loudly) complain about, it's what's locking me into GitHub.

Personally I'd argue that there's more important concerns when it comes to web services. But certainly having a free software alternative you can easily self-host is vital.
